USATF Foundation grantee athletes featured at upcoming Continental Cup

INDIANAPOLIS - Six Elite Athlete Development Grant recipients will be representing the Americas at the IAAF Continental Cup, in Split, Croatia, on September 4th & 5th, announced USATF Foundation Chairman Bob Greifeld and Executive Director Tom Jackovic today.

Formally known as the IAAF World Cup in Athletics, Kara Patterson (javelin throw), David Oliver (110m hurdles), Brianna Glenn (long jump), Dan Huling (3000m steeplechase), Nicole Leach (400m hurdles) and Mike Hazle (javelin throw) will be competing against athletes on teams from Africa, Asia/Pacific and Europe.

Besides the United States, the Americas team is comprised of athletes from North America, Central America, the Caribbean and South America. The continent with the highest collective point total (men’s & women’s) will be awarded the cup.

Both Kara Patterson and David Oliver have set new American records in 2010. Kara’s performance (66.67m/218’9”) came at the USA National Championships, while David set the standard at the Paris Diamond League meeting, clocking a blistering 12.89 over the 10 barriers, the 3rd fastest time ever recorded.

Dan, who is the 2010 USA Outdoor National Champion, also set a PR of 8:13.29 at the Diamond League meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland. Nicole represented Team USA at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and is the 2007 NCAA champion, while Brianna is the 2010 USA Outdoor 3rd place finisher and was runner-up in 2009. Mike is a 2008 Olympian, 2009 World Championship team member and is the 4th ranked javelin thrower in U.S. history.

The USATF Foundation provides a means to attract and guide funds to new and innovative track and field programs with an emphasis on providing opportunities for youth athletes, emerging elite athletes, distance training centers and anti-doping education.
