Elite Athlete Job Program - Q & A

(1) Is this program the same as the Olympic Jobs Opportunities Program (OJOP) - Home Depot Program?

Yes and no. Like the OJOP, this program includes part-time job opportunities that blend well with the schedule of a professional athlete. But, this program differs from the Home Depot Program in several important ways:

  • This program has been organized by the USA Track & Field Foundation and is focused solely on track & field athletes (versus all Olympic sports).
  • This program is also designed to help with full-time role searches for transitioning athletes at or near the end of their professional athletic life.
  • We're opening up this opportunity to a much broader list of athletes. Any track & field athlete who has ranked in the top 10 in the USA during the past year, is eligible.
  • Participating organizations will try to accommodate all interested athletes, but they are not guaranteeing that a specific job will be available.
  • Each company's employment rules will apply - the compensation level, number of work hours, and specific job duties will be determined uniquely, by each company for each individual athlete.
  • Our goal with this program is not only to give you access to a paycheck, but also to provide a career development experience.
  • We also offer a terrific career mentoring program which includes successful people from many professions who are prepared to guide and advise you. Please CLICK HERE to learn more.

(2) What if I'm interested in finding a job but none of the listed choices seem like a good fit for me?

  • No problem. You should still send in an application (see question 11 below) and we will work hard to identify something for you. You can also sign up for career mentoring and advice (see question 10 below).

(3) Will each listed company be flexible to my training and racing schedule?

  • Yes. Each company participating understands that you are a professional athlete with special scheduling and time-off needs that may differ from their other part-time employees.

(4) How much do these companies pay?

  • It varies by company and by job, and your qualifications and skills will be considered. Some participating companies have provided pay ranges....others will determine the pay as part of the hiring process.

(5) Can the work schedule be tailored to meet any unique timing needs I have, e.g., I only want to work during certain months or during certain hours of the day?

  • Probably. We will assist you in exploring any specific requests you may have of an employer.

(6) Could I get turned down for a role and could I get fired from one of these jobs?

  • Yes and yes. These are important roles in strong companies with high expectations. This program is for motivated athletes only.

(7) Will these jobs include benefits like health insurance?

  • Generally not for part-time employees. For full-time roles, health insurance is usually offered, but is subject to each company's unique policies and benefit packages.

(8) Do these jobs include any expectation to endorse, promote, or represent the company?

  • No. Although some companies may have some job ideas for you to consider that would draw on your status as a respected athlete and a fitness role model.

(9) Can I expect any additional sponsorship or support (beyond pay/benefits) from these employers?

  • No. This is not part of the expectation from these companies.

(10) Can I get help in writing a resume, preparing for an interview, or assessing my career choices?

  • Absolutely. Please CLICK HERE to get more information about our career mentoring program and USOC career services.

(11) I'm interested. What do I do next?

  • CLICK HERE, fill out the simple application, and indicate any jobs (CLICK HERE for a list) that you might be interested in. We will then confirm that a job is available that you may qualify for and, if so, will connect you with the company for further discussion.
